Diesel particulate filters were introduced to contain soot/carbon produced by the high combustion pressures and temperatures of diesel engines. Every DPF is different but they all work relatively the same. DPFs contain hundreds to thousands of "cells" depending on the size. These cells are passage ways that are staggered to trap the soot from exiting the tail pipe. Over time, the DPF cells will become full creating a restriction in the exhaust. This is where a regeneration "Regen" takes place. Using post injection or an additional injector, extra fuel is introduced, oxidized, and burned creating temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees F. This process converts soot build up into a smaller particle (ASH). Overtime ash and soot accumulate against the cell walls and can no longer provide sufficient flow or be effected by a Regen. At this point the filter needs to be removed and cleaned through a thermal and/or pneumatic process .
